Dirk & Kurt Weemaels (Huizingen) win 1st Provincial Limoges 631 old birds
11 Jul 2024
On the national race from Limoges the pigeons again had to deal with an extra night in the basket. Fortunately, they had some tailwind the next day so the flight went well overall. The winner for the province of Flemish Brabant is the tandem Dirk & Kurt Weemaels from Huizingen. Their 2-year old hen is having a great season and is currently one of the best long distance pigeons flying in our country.
The two brothers race both hens and cocks in total widowhood, pigeons that stay at home that are not doing anything just take up space and do not yield anything. The pigeons did not practice winter breeding and did not go outside from September to early March due to the numerous attacks by birds of prey. Also throughout the season, pigeons are simply picked away here several times during training at home.
The pigeons therefore only train once a day and they always try to keep an eye on the pigeons while flying. But usually there's nothing you can do about it when they attack. They train one week in the morning and the next week in the afternoon. Everything depends on how we have to work. But the pigeons must adapt to us and not the other way around.
When basketing, all doors open because the racing lofts are all next to each other and they are allowed to do their thing for 10 to 20 minutes. The pigeons all have a permanent partner and there will be nest dishes in the living boxes. After the flight, they only stay together for a few hours at the beginning of the season so that they are properly mated. Afterwards we always extend this until the evening.
All pigeons are raced in widowhood throughout the season, only the pigeons for the extreme long distance have now been coupled together and are now in a separate loft. These will then fly to Marseille and Perpignan nests.
The winner of Limoges has a cock that was injured in the spring and no longer participates in the flights. Is this the reason for her performance? We will never know of course, but what we do know is that she is extremely motivated to get into the loft of the cocks. In fact, it is so intense that she laid an egg in front of Tulle the day before. But that didn't stop her from flying great. This week she has laid another egg but this week she is getting some rest. The hens are loose in the loft and can sometimes get paired together. But that doesn't stop us from basketing the hens every week.
The pigeons are fed Beyers mixtures during the season and during the breeding period we feed Paloma Kweek.
Dirk and Kurt, who run their colony together, are already having a great season on all races.
