Erik Limbourg from Brussegem hits double on Limoges and Blois

07 Jun 2024

Last weekend the first long distance flight was on the national calendar, according to annual tradition this is Limoges, which unfortunately had to deal with bad weather again. The release was postponed until Tuesday. The pigeons got some wind at their backs, which fortunately worked to their advantage after so many nights in the basket. The winner for the province of Flemish Brabant can be found in the lofts of Erik Limbourg, his 3-year old hen won 1st Provincial against 1,107 pigeons and 9th National against 10,853 pigeons. This hen has already achieved a very nice track record and again comes from the line of super breeder “593” from Wolfgang Roeper. This was the good news about Limoges, unfortunately Erik also had to deal with some leaders who did not reach home base and a top player had come home yesterday who was seriously injured. Top players also face setbacks and unfortunately no one can do anything about this.

For Erik, the double victory was a boost after he had also won provincial Blois a day earlier, also with a hen, but in the yearlings against 1,710 pigeons. This hen also comes from Erik's best lines with “Triple 5 Barcelona” and “Creone Roeper”.

Because both winners are hens, we will explain this system a little.

The hens do not do winter breeding, only the yearlings were coupled in the spring to breed for 8 to 9 days. This makes them more stable and they immediately have a permanent partner. At the beginning of this season Erik had 44 hens for 24 cocks, so most of the time was paired with 2 hens to one cock. The old hens were not allowed to breed in the spring, but they still knew their partner from the previous season.

Not a single old or yearling is darkened here in Brussegem. The hens regularly come outside during the winter period to keep up the rhythm. The pigeons all trained well in the spring and Erik had a different vision for the coming season, especially with the hens. The intention here was that he would train them, especially in East Flanders, for the speed flights so that they would come more from the masses with the aim of being known for the nationals.

During the season itself, the training of the hens is no longer what it was, 2x 6 minutes was the answer when I asked how long they flew. But I don't care about that anymore, as long as they come, that's fine with me. The cocks, on the other hand, still fly for 40 to 50 minutes. The hens are also not allowed to stay outside longer than necessary because they only learn bad manners there.

As motivation for basketing, the cocks are always shown to the hens just before basketing. In the beginning this is 5 to 10 minutes. Now this is gradually approaching half an hour. When they return home, they can take turns with their cock and whoever gets home first has the first fun. The angriest hens are allowed to stay with the cocks for the longest time so that they don't ignite things during the week by mating with each other, but so far everything is still under control. So those ladies can sometimes stay with their cock for a night.

The hens stay in a resting loft and are fed at least 3 times a day, mainly because there is no drink in their resting loft, so Erik still wants to let them drink regularly. Then they are allowed to eat on the floor in the other cage in front of their breeding boxes. The pigeons are given a variation of Beyers together with Aidi (Vliegmix 1-2-3, Long Distance) and are mixed and fed according to their own taste. With his years of knowledge this will not be a problem. Before the racing season, the racing pigeons were purified against tricho and the respiratory tract and before an important flight, the pigeons were usually purified with a pill against tricho 2 to 3 days before basketing.
