Gommaire Verbruggen (Scherpenheuvel) wins 1-2-3 Provincial Bourges 904 old pigeons

Only two weeks ago we wrote that Gommaire Verbruggen was having a super season when he won 2 x 1st Nat (z) Bourges among the old and yearlings. It is now two weeks later and the next flight from Bourges was on Saturday. Here he scored with the old 1-2-3 Provincial against 904 old pigeons, which is also good for 1-2-8 Nat (z) of 1,059 old pigeons and nationally this is 3-7-31 against 5,529 old pigeons. 

The hen that won the 1st Nat (z) from Bourges two weeks ago repeats this feat again and wins ahead of her loft mate “Lotte”. Both are now known as “Noor” and “Lotte”, this because of the 3rd place nationally on Bourges achieved by “Noor” and the 3rd National ace pigeon heavy middle distance achieved by “Lotte”. Our pride in the Olympic Games, which both won bronze in Paris, is also paid tribute here by our feathered friends. 

In total, Gommaire achieved 5 x 2nd Provincial in the 2024 season and this is his first provincial victory of the season. The season for the old pigeons is now over and he can look back on this with pride.

The hens were all coupled at the end of November to raise a round of youngsters. This way you will find a new winner among the racing pigeons faster than waiting until the racing career is over. Afterwards the pigeons came back outside and trained once a day in the morning. They were darkened from early March to about the end of April. Additional lighting is not done here because it is usually this period that I stop using the old and young pigeons, so additional lighting is not necessary. 

This also means that most of the young pigeons are now stopped, I still play with some Vierzon and maybe for a little longer, but most of the young pigeons no longer participate. They have flown a few middle distance races and also flew Bourges nationally last weekend. When I look at my old pigeons that are now doing well, they have not flown more than one national flight as youngsters. You can squeeze a lemon and keep squeezing it, but once the juice is out it stops, these are literally the words Gommaire used during my visit. The focus here is mainly on yearlings and old pigeons and that is why the young pigeons are not squeezed out until the end of the season.

The daily training sessions are usually 30 to 40 minutes and they always stay outside for at least an hour, they always train in the morning and I think the cocks trained better than the hens this year, but that's just how you see. The two best pigeons of this season were hens while my 3rd best pigeon is a cock. Training is never done at home on the day of basketing, during the last 2 national races I took the pigeons away on the day of basketing and let them come home together. An extra motivation that can help at the end of the season, they were allowed to stay together for half an hour before I separated them again. Just before basketing, they are picked up and basketed. When they return home, they can always stay together until the evening, but from the last flights I also choose to leave them together until the morning of the next day. 

In terms of nutrition, Gommaire still firmly believes in the Super Recup Anthoons mixture, to which he adds sunflower seeds and peanuts in the last few days. Medically, he often checks the pigeons himself for tricho in order to keep everything under control. If tricho is found, he will treat it, if the hens have nothing and the cocks do, only the cocks will be given a pill. A person doesn't take medication if there is nothing wrong. There is no treatment for the respiratory tract or coccidiosis. The vaccinations on the agenda for the young pigeons here are Rota Paramyxo Circo and Paramyxo Herpes from Vincent Schroeder. As yearlings, the hens only receive the normal paramxyo as a vaccination. The smallpox was done very late this year, the young pigeons got it around mid-July.
