In Dutch pigeon racing, the name Herman Brinkman is synonymous with strong performance in marathon races. From his home town of Tuk, located in Overijssel, he has developed into one of the most respected fanciers within the heavy long distance races. The immense distances of flights such as Barcelona (1,308 km), St. Vincent (1,153 km), Cahors (1,053 km), Agen (1,053 km) and Perigueux (935 km) require pigeons with iron perseverance. The Brinkman pigeons prove time and again that they can handle these flights.
A Lifelong Passionate Marathon
Herman Brinkman, now in his mid-70s, has been under the spell of pigeon racing since his youth. His father, Jan Brinkman, was active on the program flights, but Herman always had a fondness for the marathon flights. That passion grew further when he moved to Tuk with his wife Ria in the late 1970s. In addition to his passion for pigeons, Herman was also a teacher for many years, a profession he practiced with dedication for 41 years.
When Herman and Ria furnished their new home, they bought furniture from furniture giant Eijerkamp in Zutphen. A unique promotion by Eijerkamp ensured that with their purchase they also received coupons to redeem for pigeons from their breeding center. On the advice of Hans Eijerkamp Herman chose pigeons from Adrianus van der Wegen, from whom Hans had bought a round of youngsters in 1973. That same year the Van der Wegen pigeons won the 1st National Barcelona. Although Herman was initially disappointed in the small, spree-like pigeons, they turned out to be invaluable. A few years later he bred from these lines the 1st National St. Vincent 1986 and the legendary pigeon “Schoorsteen”, which in that same year became 1st National ace WHZB and represented the Netherlands at the Olympiad in Dortmund in 1987.
To further strengthen his colony, Herman obtained pigeons from Vertelman and Son in 1990, including descendants of the famous Jan Theelen pigeons. Another important acquisition was the purchase of “3 Zeventjes” from Mees-van Ginkel.
Successful Pigeon Line and International Impact
The Brinkman pigeons not only produced top performances in Tuk, but they also excelled in other lofts. A special anecdote is the sale of late youngsters, where Buellens and Son from Heverlee purchased several pigeons. Their “Black Brinkman” and “Little Brinkman” grew into basic pigeons of their successful Barcelona line.
We also encounter the name Brinkman in the pedigrees of international winners such as “New Laureaat” with Luc Wiels and “Jef” with Rans Stijn and Jeroen. The strong Brinkman pigeon strain has led to many national and international victories.
