Timmermans – Poels (Schaffen) win 1st Provincial Argenton 2,135 young pigeons
11 Sep 2024
After this colony had a super season last year with, among other things, a 1st National Bourges of 9,922 old and yearlings and was also the fastest of 30,250 pigeons in total, Chris and Vanessa have once again won a great victory. They won 1st Provincial Argenton against 2,135 young pigeons with “343/24” and are in 3rd place in the ace pigeons just before the last national flight with the young pigeons. Timmermans – Poels from Schaffen in Flemish Brabant, remember the name well because I think we will hear more about this in the coming years.
As I mentioned above, the pigeons as a whole were in great shape last year, the young pigeons did fantastic and came home like a chain and then you also win a 1st National with the old pigeons. The young pigeons from back then performed very well again this year as yearlings and this with not a large team of pigeons. Chris tries to keep the colony small by only looking for good ones and making sure they are selected. The only way to success is to be strict and that appears to work, just like in many top lofts.
Young pigeons
The 1st round was not played here in recent years and was always discarded. Afterwards a 2nd and 3rd round is more than enough for them to make their plans with the young pigeons. These were darkened immediately from weaning and he continues this until about the longest day of the year, after which nothing is done for a few weeks and then he starts with additional lighting until the end of the season.
The young pigeons always train once a day in the morning and may train less hard compared to last year, but I am still among the first pigeons every week. So I attach little importance to training at home once the pigeons have flown in. The day after the flight is always a rest day here after a national flight, on the shorter flights they come back out the day after.
In the beginning the pigeons are just raced among each other without motivation, they fly their first flights from Momignies and usually they go on the sliding door. This year I did that a little later because there was little atmosphere between the young pigeons. You may have that problem if you play a 2nd and 3rd round, which of course mature a little less quickly than those of the first round.
In terms of motivation, nothing special is done in the first few weeks, they are allowed to explore the neighborhood but they split up quite quickly when they return home. Once the middle distance starts, it takes a little longer and from the national races onwards they stay together until Sunday morning.
If I think the pigeons need extra training, I will take them away on Thursday morning and they can stay together for a whole day. If I don't do that, they will come together in the afternoon and basket them straight away. This year I have used the first system maybe 3 or 4 times, but I see little difference.
The preparation went well and they flew 2x Momignies, 4x Soissons and then 2x middle distance before going to the national flights. That will certainly be the goal of this colony in the coming years. Between Vierzon and Argenton they flew Soissons and last week after Argenton they flew Laon. They have flown a total of 13 times and the belt will come off after the last weekend of Chateauroux.
Medically, I am going for a check-up with Simon Cans from Neornivet and I will not have to do much about tricho in a whole year. The airways are now also fine thanks to the cage in the right place. The mixtures I use come from Anthoons, so Super Recup and Purification will be used for the speed and for the other flights I will use Super Recup at the beginning of the week and build up with Breeding Mixture.
As an extra, they receive grit every day and occasionally All-In-One from DHP. During the week, garlic oil with brewer's yeast is added to the food and I give vitamins once a week in the drinking water, just as they receive electrolytes or honey when they return home.
