Kris and Lieselotte De Bisschop from Essene have a fantastic team of yearlings

In Essene, Flemish Brabant, the De Bisschop family is back on track. Their racing team, which only consists of yearlings, has started the season fantastically with several first prizes and always a great series to follow. The confirmation of the past seasons where the team of Kris and his wife Ann, together with their daughter Lieselotte, is a real team. Kris's father Marc mainly helps with training and administration because Kris already has a busy task as a self-employed person. 

Only with yearling hens

We have made the choice to move all our best yearlings from last season to the breeding loft so that we can start with a new team of yearlings. In our opinion, these are still the best for racing hens in the system we use. They have to be really sharp and motivated to be able to win the middle distance races every week. There will certainly be several good old hens in our country, but we prefer to apply this rule. 

The hens do not breed in the winter period and fly 1 to 1.5 hours per day in the spring. Basic fitness and routine are the rules for success, training and eating. That's all they have to do. During the season itself they usually train in the morning for 30 to 45 minutes. During the day they are kept in a spacious aviary so that they do not become eager to mate, and in the evening they are allowed into their resting loft. Flying weekly is the message here, due to the bad weather we have also had to skip a middle distance flight and they have been brought back once, but that is simply part of this season. 

We do nothing during basketing, we prefer to basket calm pigeons rather than violent ones, they will quickly master the system after 2-3 flights. During the first flights they are allowed to stay together for 2 hours after returning home and as the season progresses this becomes longer and longer.

Accompaniment 

Here they rely completely on the Aidi mixtures and their by-products, they now know this diet and schedule inside and out. You just have to get used to it and get comfortable with it just like with other brands.

During the season itself they use Flying Mix 1 – 2 or 3 and occasionally Girl Power depending on the upcoming flight. The young pigeons are weaned into breeding and continue to receive this mixture until they exchange small feathers. If they have to train afterwards, we switch to Flying Mix 1, but flying itself has not been a problem here for several years. 

In terms of medical guidance, we prefer to have one more check-up than to treat blindly. Our permanent man for this is Frederik Oosterlinck. If necessary, the racing pigeons receive a yellow drop in the beak and were treated once last season against the respiratory tract. They vaccinate all their pigeons against paramyxo and the young also against smallpox. In the autumn a check is carried out for paratyphus. If the result is negative, they are immediately vaccinated, if the result is positive, they cure their pigeons before vaccination. The lofts are always thoroughly cleaned and disinfected in the autumn to be ready for the new season.
