Luc Herbots from Zepperen : 'Super Barca 776' stays the golden vein from this colony

For many years we have the habit in passing by at Luc Herbots in Zepperen when Barcelona is raced. Why? Well, very simple, or he wins the 1st provincial as which has happened for 3 times now since 2011 or he sets an extra ordinary result you just can't pass by ! It is and stays his most favourite race and will do anything to make sure his pigeons will be at the start off the race in the best possible way. But I also have to confess that the result on his loft in 2019 in general was also amazing.

After such a hard edition being able to set this kind of results you have to have super class pigeons. The red wire trough this colony is still “776/97” Super Barca 776 who became the best International pigeon on Barcelona over 2 years in 2001-2002. The golden strain of this top pigeon is Antoon and Luci Van der Wegen that is already woven in the 4th - 5th and 6th generation in the best pigeons that are racing at this moment. The past few years it is the strain of the best racing hens like “Claire” 2nd National Barcelona, “Iron Barca Lady” 1 Prov Barcelona and “Lady Zephira” 1 Prov Barcelona and 1 Prov St.Vincent and “Mimi” 6 x Barcelona who are top on the breeding loft. But especially the strain from “Lady Zephira” does extremely well. In 2018 the first arriving pigeon was a direct daughter out of her en in 2019 a great-granddaughter ! This says it all....

Build up towards Barcelona
The natural resistance is off course very important, from the moment they are born is this what counts, as young birds that don't show themselves in being strong are just being taken out. So the selections starts here at day 1 to be able to find after 2 or 3 years those few that are able to shine on Barcelona.
As a year bird the pigeons race without any motivation as nuns and priests, they mostly do a Narbonne to have the necessary experience but they do set good results anyhow with this year also 3 x TOP 16 provincial. When this race is over the pigeons are being coupled on the Barcelona loft and get a spot pointed out and can have their first nest there to make sure they feel at home right away.
Afterwards a period of rest, moulting and strengthening of the resistance follows. On the 1st of March they can come together again and are being coupled again to raise one youngster. During this period they are being trained and have some shorter races and some middle distance races. It is important that the pigeons get their necessary kilometers and can get home easy out of the big flock.
What has changed from 2018? Only one thing, the pigeons always have one national race before Barcelona and this is normally Chateauroux at the beginning of June but in 2018 the weather wasn't good and Luc chose Valence as national race. This year the weather was ok and he raced as always Chateauroux. After this race they can start building their nest for Barcelona and are being basketing at 10 days breeding. But maybe the most important thing for Luc are the weeks between Chateauroux and Barcelona, the pigeons get 3 to 4x a day food, every day fresh grit and fly out the entire day. The come into a kind of relaxation where all the stress has to come off by the time it is Barcelona. Just before their important race they are being tossed one more time direction Luxembourg and then it is waiting for them to home from Spain.
Guidance
In matter of food it is very simple as they always get moulting mixture from Hoebrechts during the racing season with every day fresh grit. In the morning a portion of super diet is mixed under it as well. Until Chateauroux the pigeons get enough to eat but not full, afterwards he changes onto the several feedings per day.
He went to Raf Herbots 3 times for a medical check up but didn't find anything special. The pigeons were being purched beginning of May with Tricho Green from Schroeder – Tollissan and got 4 days before Barcelona each a Spartrix pill.
